Interview : Shadee Kevinours
Who are you ?
My name is Shadee K. Shadee was my first nickname in the graffiti community and, later, I just added the K. I was raised by a Kabylian foster family. In Algerian, Shadee means "monkey". My family gave me this name because I used to jump around like a little monkey. It stuck until my teenage years. That’s when I started tagging Shadee.
And where does the K come from ?
K stands for Kevin. I’m 26.
Why do you draw teddy bears? ("nounours" in French)
When I first started tagging and making graffiti, one of my exes used to give me teddy bears as gifts. She was a fan and my teddy bear drawings were for her. I kept drawing them for three years and decided to keep going. Then people started calling me "Kevinou" at school. I added the R and came up with "Kevinours".
When did you start tagging ?
I think I was about 15. I started in Le Blanc-Mesnil, Seine-Saint-Denis (French department number 93). I lived there most of my life; I’m only in Paris since 2009.
From tagging to art…
I make collages now, it’s more practical and faster. Plus, I can really make drawings. But I don’t forget tagging, considering I use graffiti in my work. I don’t really use letterings as much anymore because I think that you know how to write your name after ten years! I feel like doing something different. I feel like I’m going round and round in circles with the teddy bears.
Any collaborations ?
I like "mixing up" with other artists: CodexUrbanus, Béa PYL, Dudy, Cap Phi, etc, that way you can learn and see each other work. Between the collaborations I suggest and the ones I’m offered, I try to do as much as possible. It’s a good experience (you get to discover new places for instance). We make graffiti; it’s actually much more collective than street art. I try to introduce a bit of graffiti into street art…
The evolution of the teddy bear.
The expression of the teddy bear depends on the drawing. When I create, I don’t think "It’s going to be nice or mean; pink today, green tomorrow and blue the day after". It’s really when I’m in front of my page, I scribble and it just comes to my mind. The shape of the head and the color can change. I choose the color once the drawing is finished.
What is your opinion about street art exhibitions in art galleries ?
It’s a really good thing! You get to meet people, sell pieces of work. Exhibiting drawings is a lot of people’s dream. I organized the "In and Out" exhibition at the Frigos (art site in the 13th administrative subdivision of Paris). We’re lucky in Paris because we can do things like this. We don’t really get carried away stupidly though; we constantly improve around other people. Exhibitions enable all that. The street gets inside the galleries, hence the theme "In and Out".
Any projects for 2014 ?
I’m going to try and organize more exhibitions, but not only in Paris. And to make my first art book.
Who are your heroes ?
I’m really into comics. I collect comic books and I frame some of them. My favorites are Daredevil and Batman.
Any questions I forgot to ask ?
Why did I organize this exhibition? Because I wanted people to see my friends, those artists who never exhibit: Béa PYL, Maxime Aum, Li Dilian, Cap Phi. I wanted to give them what I’ve been given. I wanted to be collective. All my favorite ones are here.
