About THISISOPIUM Biography
THISISOPIUM is an urban and public Greek artist based in Athens.
Born in Greece in 1990, he works inside and outside using a wide variety of mediums. His main interest though is creating public murals. Through the years he has collaborated in a variety of projects with Greek and foreign artists from various backgrounds, exhibited in Greece, the UK, Spain and Mexico and left his mark on the streets of cities all around the world from Europe to India. His work is based in surreal imagery and the development of a visual language full of spiritual symbolism that connects to the transcendent.
His work has been featured in numerous publications, Greek and foreign, and impressively including the cover of the International New York Times. He is currenlty living in London, where he is studying an Arts degree.
So why THISISOPIUM, some years ago he it came to him that opium is opium, football and religion are the opium of the masses, and for him, painting is his opium.
In THISISOPIUM's words, "I choose the street because its a free for all, exciting platform to communicate, provoke and live. I want to bring the surreal and the romantic in our everyday routine. I am heavily influenced from traditional folk painting as well as ancient greek art and the religious and folk art of the Eastern world. I hope i can keep on forever."
What are THISISOPIUM influences? "My bigger influences are not really other artists but I really like symbols so I ended up admiring drawings and paintings depicting alchemy and mysticism symbols as well as eastern religious paintings (Hindu,Buddhist etc.). I don’t really know about who or what inspired me. The streets seemed open to anyone that’s what I enjoyed."
